Lightfoot Proposes Congestion Tax on Ride-Hailing
The Lightfoot administration is proposing what reportedly would be the nation’s highest ride-hailing fees, with the Ground Transportation Tax rising from the current 60 cents to as much as $2.35 for single-use rides downtown during peak periods. The goal of the so-called congestion tax is encouraging use of sustainable transit options, including buses.
Ride-hailing traffic in Chicago has increased 271% in recent years, the administration says. “Our city, like many others across the nation, has experienced skyrocketing congestion growth due in part to the rapid growth of ride-hailing companies, making it increasingly difficult for those who rely upon Chicago’s streets for commerce or transportation, and plaguing our downtown,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
“Using an evidence-based approach to combat our congestion challenges, Chicago is taking these first steps to improve mobility and further our goals of ensuring sustainable, affordable and reliable access to transportation options in every neighborhood,” she added.
