Lightfoot Focuses on Four Growth Sectors in 10-Year Strategy

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 10-year strategy for growing Chicago’s economy concentrates on four business sectors, while also reversing the city’s population loss. In a speech to the Economic Club of Chicago, where she was introduced by Ventas chairman Debra A. Cafaro, Lightfoot cited transportation, distribution and logistics; technology; tourism and hospitality; and healthcare and life sciences as growth industries for Chicago.

In the case of tech, Lightfoot said, “We will continue to build this sector out in every direction, and do more to tell the story of the Silicon Prairie that is growing and thriving.” She added, though, that “We cannot hope to sustainably grow our economy by simply relying on growth to the exclusion of rebuilding our communities.”

She urged business leaders to support her administration’s initiative to invest in 10 neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides that have borne the brunt of population outflow over the years.
