Lightfoot: Chicago is in ”Second Surge” of Pandemic

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady sounded the alarm on Monday over a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, positivity rate and hospitalizations. Over the past two weeks, cases have risen by more than 50% and hospitalizations are up by 25%.

Chicago’s test positivity rate is 5.4%, up from 4.2% a week ago, Arwady told reporters Monday. “In no part of the city am I satisfied with what the percent positivity is,” she said.

“The data is clear—we are now in a second surge of COVID-19 and I am extremely concerned,” said Lightfoot. “Now is the time to double down on what we know works and come together as a city to flatten the curve once again.”

Although no additional restrictions were announced on Monday, the Lightfoot administration is considering additional measures in the coming days, including a rollback to Phase Three of the phased reopening plan.
