LIC May Get Half of Amazon’s HQ2

Maybe the “2” in HQ2 stands for two locations. Reports in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal that Amazon will divide its second North American headquarters evenly between Crystal City in Arlington, VA and Long Island City in Queens have CRE’s heavy hitters in LIC speculating on how it will all play out.

“I can promise you that if they’re close to announcing they’re coming to Long Island City, they’ve identified the locations,” Leslie Himmel, co-managing partner of LIC landlord Himmel + Meringoff, told Crain’s New York Business. “But personally, I have no idea where they’re going.”

Assuming the Times and WSJ reports prove accurate, the e-commerce giant would initially lease about 500,000 square feet for LIC’s share of HQ2, and would hire about 25,000 in the region. It would be likely to take advantage of tax breaks through New York State’s Excelsior Jobs program, Crain’s reported.
