LI Unemployment Hits Two-Decade Low

Long Island’s unemployment rate hit a 20-year low in April, according to figures from the State Department of Labor. The 3% jobless rate in Nassau and Suffolk Counties was down 60 basis points from a year ago and matched the level last seen in April of 1999 and 2000.

The island’s Nassau County in particular was tied with upstate’s Columbia County for the lowest unemployment rate in New York State, 2.9%. Among metro areas, only Ithaca, also upstate, matched the Nassau/Suffolk jobless rate, also dropping 60 bps from a year ago.

“Overall, a low employment rate and the resulting tight labor market could really lead to a lot of positives for our region,” the Labor Department’s Shital Patel told Newsday.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 3.9%, or 30 bps above the national average. At 3.7%, New York City’s jobless rate was slightly below the state average.
