San Antonio Santikos movie theaters extends their empire

Legendary San Antonio Theater Chain Buys 17 Theaters

San Antonio-based Santikos has acquired The Grand Theatres and AmStar Cinemas from VSS-Southern Theatres LLC, a New York-based private equity company. 

The San Antonio Business Journal reported terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it includes 17 theaters and more than 250 screens spread across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.

Santikos currently operates 10 theaters housing 121 screens in the greater San Antonio market. The acquisition makes Santikos the eighth-largest in North America.

Santikos, which was founded in 1911, has been pursuing expansion plans since 2018 after clearing challenges caused by Covid-19.

The deal with VSS-Southern Theatres includes four IMAX venues.
