LAX Plans Major Expansion Ahead of 2028 Olympics

The operator of LAX has proposed another extensive expansion of the airport that will touch airfield improvements, new terminal facilities, as well as roadways. An initial study released by Los Angeles World Airports on the project proposes an array of improvements and the addition of at least 21 gates that are envisioned to be open in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

A new 12-gate Terminal 9 is planned east of Sepulveda Boulevard on land currently housing airline hangars, maintenance facilities and a regional carrier concourse. Terminal 1, which houses Southwest Airlines, would be expanded with a four-level, nine-gate Concourse 0 facility encompassing 745,000 square feet. It would be built over a parking lot east of the existing terminal. A pedestrian bridge over Sepulveda is also proposed between Terminals 8 and 9.

The airport is already underway on $14 billion in upgrades to roads and terminals. A $1.6- billion midfield concourse is being built west of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, and renovations are underway on terminals used by Delta, American and Southwest Airlines. LAX’s $4.9-billion people-mover broke ground last month with a 2022 opening date planned.
