Lawyers in Real Estate 2020: Allen Matkins’ Tony Natsis

Allen Matkins global real estate chair Tony Natsis frequently serves as lead counsel on some of the largest and most high-profile real estate deals on the West Coast and across the U.S. Since early March 2020, he has been one of the leading attorneys and real estate professionals that have been educating the real estate and legal communities through published materials, articles, seminars, published interviews, and group discussions about COVID-19-related real estate and legal issues and has led the fight against California legislative bill SB-939, which eventually died in the Senate.

In the past decade, Natsis has closed commercial office leases exceeding 50 million square feet, has worked on real estate purchase contracts with a total consideration of more than $30 billion, on development transactions with a total consideration in excess of $25 billion, joint venture transactions with a total consideration in excess of $25 billion, and has represented clients in office building portfolio investment sales transactions involving more than $75 billion of consideration.

One of Natsis’ most significant transactions is the largest real estate acquisition deal in the history of the United States. He provided extensive real estate services in connection with Blackstone Real Estate’s purchase of Equity Office Properties Trust, at that point the largest owner of office space in the U.S. other than the federal government, for $43 billion.

He also worked as landlord’s counsel on the two largest leases in the history of the City of San Francisco: the 750,000-square-foot lease by Kilroy Realty Corp to Dropbox and the 725,000-square-foot lease by Boston Properties to Salesforce. He also worked on the largest lease in the history of the Western Region on behalf of a well-known technology tenant, a 1.9-million-square-foot deal in Silicon Valley.

It’s for these reasons that we named Tony Natsis to our inaugural grouping of Lawyers in Real Estate. These are real estate attorneys who have distinguished themselves in both their practice and the larger community.
