Lawmakers to George P. Bush: Where is the Alamo Money Going?
Over the past year, the Texas General Land Office, headed by Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush and the city of San Antonio, developed and unveiled a multimillion-dollar master plan to restore the Alamo, one of the most famous landmarks in the Lone Star State. During the 2017 Texas Legislature session, $75 million was allocated toward the upgrade.
Bush was recently grilled by Texas Senate Finance Committee members, partly in connection with the nonprofit Alamo Endowment and its subsidiary the Alamo Trust, which are managing the restoration. Lawmakers want to know where the money is going.
Because the Alamo Trust is private, it isn’t subject to the Texas Public Information Act. Lawmakers told Bush they’d prefer to see Alamo Trust staff working for the state. Said Senate Finance Committee Chairwoman Jane Nelson: “The $75 million commitment was a commitment for the people of Texas, and its important Texans know how we spend that money.”
