Latinos Now a Majority in California
Latinos are now officially the largest ethnic group in California, surpassing whites. The Census Bureau reported that as of July last year there were 14.99 million Latinos compared to 14.92 white residents.
Predictions were that this would take place in 2013, but a dip in population growth slowed the process. This makes California the third state in the nation without a white majority. The other two are Hawaii and New Mexico.
California has the largest Latino population of any state, while Los Angeles County boasts the most of any county in the country. Demographers predict that by 2060, the ethnic group will total about 49 percent of the state’s overall population.
