Largest Stretch of Coastal Land Closer to Development Reality

Representatives from the Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians and the Tongva Ancestral Territorial Tribal Nation support Newport Banning Ranch’s development proposal for the largest stretch of undeveloped, privately owned coastal real estate in So Cal. The Newport Beach, CA-based company plans to clean the oil field property, restore its wildlife habitat, and establish permanent funding to manage and protect more than 300 acres of the site as open space.

The 400-acre Newport Banning Ranch property has been an active oil field exploration and drilling site for 75 years. The limited development plan includes an 895-apartment complex, a 75-room hotel, 20-room hostel and a small commercial center.

Now, digging on the land to determine if there are any archaeological or other Native American artifacts can begin. The California Coastal Commission is slated to hear the proposal in September.
