Largest Complex Made of Shipping Containers Opens in June 2022 in Phoenix
The IDA on McKinley is a six-story, 19 unit apartment made up entirely of shipping containers. Local Studio’s Brian Stark said the units are the most sustainable in the country, “We didn’t have to make 615,000 pounds of steel to build this building. It already existed, and we used it. That reduces our carbon footprint unbelievably.” Besides the repurposing of the steel, the developers are incorporating solar panels and are collecting stormwater runoff. White, heavily-reflective, exterior paint keeps the units cooler than one might expect.
At six stories, it’s the tallest of its kind in the country. The 64 shipping containers that make up the project features one and two-bedroom apartments, however don’t expect covered parking. To encourage biking or walk-to-work there will be no on-site parking, however there will be exterior showers and electric bike charging stations. A one bedroom unit will go for $1,700 a month, a two bedroom unit, $2,000.
