Landmark Seattle Building Listed for Sale at $6M

Preserving legacy buildings comes in different forms … different stages. In west Seattle’s Junction neighborhood, preservation advocates helped two buildings attain city-sanctioned landmark status. That was five years ago. 

Now, one of those buildings is up for sale. The asking price is $6 million. The Campbell Building sits at the corner of California and Alaska streets. The landmark portion of The Campbell, however, only applies to the structure’s two, dark red and clinker brown* facades (inset). Here’s a snippet from the city’s landmark-status documentation:

“NC3P-95 Zoning allows a significant development opportunity for one of the most important corners in the Junction.”

The Campbell Building’s been owned by the same family for almost 80 years, and they did not object to the designation, first reported at WestSeattleBlog.com.

The second landmark building abuts the Campbell Building along the latter’s north wall. The two buildings share some overlapping interiors, as well. 

* Q: Where did clinker bricks originate?

* A: Clinker bricks, or sand bricks, are also known as Dutch paving bricks. In 18th-century New York, the Dutch interspersed dark clinkers with regular bricks.
