Landlords Turn Up the Heat

Property managers will spend a little more this winter to keep their residents warm. Not only is the heating season anticipated to be brutally cold this year — city law now requires property owners to provide more heat to apartment residents.

“Beginning this month, the minimum required overnight heat temperature is 62 degrees, regardless of the outdoor temperature,” said Maria Torres-Springer, commissioner of Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner.

The new standard is much tougher than the old standard, which required living spaces to be heated to at least 55 degrees when the outside temperature was less than 40 degrees.
