Landlord to Pay $500K to Settle Tenant Harrassment Case

ICON Realty Management agreed to pay $500,000 in penalties, fees and costs as part of its settlement with city and state officials in a tenant harassment case. ICON also agreed to provide a safe living environment for the hundred of renters who live in rent-regulated apartments owned and managed by ICON in Brooklyn and Manhattan’s East Village and Lower East Side neighborhoods.

“Too often, bad landlords see rent-regulated apartments as a goldmine – looking to make a quick buck by using construction to harass tenants out of their homes,” said New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (pictured). “Unscrupulous landlords should be on notice: we’ll use every legal tool at our disposal to protect New York’s tenants.”

Residents endured problems including “excessive dust and debris from construction” and “inconsistent and irregular heat and hot water, and lack of cooking gas and elevator service,” for extended periods of time, according to an investigation by the Tenant Harassment Prevention Task Force, formed by officials state and city officials.

ICON, through its attorney, does not admit to any wrongdoing, and says it has addressed the problems, according to reporting in the New York Post.
