LA County Forms Alternative Utility to SoCal Edison

Los Angeles County Supervisors approved the creation of an alternative utility to Southern California Edison for businesses and residents in LA County. The public “Community Choice Aggregation” energy program is expected to reduce power bills by as much as 5%.

The new government-operated utility offers a choice to stay with Edison. Customers can also select their electricity provider, as well as the type of generation, whether solar, wind or another clean energy source.

Initially, the program would be offered to some 500,000 residential users and 200,000 commercial utility customers in unincorporated cities across the county. Users in incorporated cities require approval by elected officials.

Customers of municipal utilities such as LA DWP, Pasadena Water and Power or Burbank Water and Power are unaffected.

LA County’s new utility will be governed by the Los Angeles Community Choice Energy Authority, and is expected to launch service next year.
