LA City Council Approves George Lucas’ Expo Park Museum
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved George Lucas’ Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park. Planned as a roughly 275,000-square-foot facility, the $1-billion project could commence construction later this year, and is expected to open in 2021.
The museum is envisioned to encompass Lucas’ personal collection of art and cinematic memorabilia. That includes illustrations for magazines, posters and children’s books, a small group of paintings and, of course, movie set designs, costumes and storyboards complemented by Star Wars and Indiana Jones items.
Ma Yansong of MAD Architects will design the museum, which comes with a $400-million Lucas endowment. City Council members called the museum the largest private gift in the history of Los Angeles, the state and the nation.
