Obama Factory Sensor Institute Coming to L.A.
A new federally-funded institute focused on developing efficient sensors for the manufacturing process is set to be based at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA. It is the ninth such manufacturing research center created by the Obama administration.
The project will receive $140 million in public and private funding and be coordinated by a consortium of researchers, including those at UCLA, as well as satellite centers in Texas, New York, Washington and North Carolina. Companies such as Google, Microsoft and Northrop Grumman will participate and invest in the initiative.
Advanced sensors developed by the hub will help monitor energy use in manufacturing, which consumes roughly a third of the energy used in the US. The software involved is expected to be available on open-source platforms so that it can be incorporated into more sensors.
