L.A. Properties, Portfolios Receive Energy and Water Efficiency Awards

The Los Angeles Better Buildings Challenge (LABBC) recently recognized the property owners and managers of six L.A. buildings and property portfolios for outstanding energy and water performance. The LABBC Innovation Awards recognize contributions toward the energy and water conservation goals laid out in the Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Sustainable City plan.
Connect Media asked LABBC Executive Director David Hodgins to share a bit about the organization, the awards program and why the group is committed to achieve hugely ambitious energy and water targets. Check out his responses in our latest 3 CRE Q&A.
Q: What is the LABBC about and what is the organization’s mission? A: Funded by utilities, non-profits, and the U.S. Department of Energy, The L.A. Better Buildings Challenge (LABBC) is catalyzing the modernization of L.A.’s buildings. Working with policymakers, industry, and advocacy groups, LABBC has set an ambitious goal of engaging 1,000 existing buildings (150 million square feet) to accelerate investment in capital projects that save energy and water, with a goal to reduce consumption while lowering operating costs. LABBC also partners with the City in operating the EBEWE ordinance resource center.
Q: What are some of the ways LABBC works with CRE landlords to achieve those goals? A: In order to achieve this goal, the LABBC provides a range of complementary consulting services to support property owners and managers. Our advisory services include project discovery and evaluation, rebate identification and application assistance, and EBEWE Ordinance compliance support. Additionally, the LABBC provides recognition to leading properties through its Innovation Awards.
Q: We understand the LABBC Innovation Awards happen every year. What are they about and how does recognizing these leaders support Mayor Garcetti’s recently launched “L.A.’s Green New Deal”? A: “L.A.’s Green New Deal” envisions reducing 44% of building energy use per-square-foot, and transforming the entire building stock to zero-emission technologies by 2050. The Innovation Awards recognize industry leaders paving the way to make this a reality.
Landlords and property managers submit efficiency projects to the LABBC. These are then judged by industry, advocacy, utilities and government leaders. This year’s winners included Brookfield Properties (pictured), NBC Universal, and the Westin Bonaventure Hotel among others. Combined, this year’s Finalists saved over 125 kBtu/ft², 25 million gallons of water, and 570,480 metric tons of CO2 per year.
Ultimately, it is only through this relentless pursuit that the city will achieve its goals and we become a truly resilient community. We encourage properties to submit their projects and recognize their team’s hard work.
