LA officials gather for LAX people mover ground breaking

Construction commenced on the $4.9-billion Automated People Mover (APM), a train which will connect travelers directly to LAX airport terminals and create new and convenient locations for passenger pick-up and drop-off. The historic 2.25-mile infrastructure project is expected be completed in 2023.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says, “The Automated People Mover is a historic investment in our city’s transportation infrastructure — a milestone that will create middle-class jobs, reduce traffic congestion, and deliver a world-class experience for travelers.”

The six-station train is the centerpiece of a modernization program, which also includes a consolidated rental car facility and associated roadway improvements. The people mover will connect with L.A. Metro’s rail system, and is expected to serve 30 million travelers annually.

Last year a 30-year, $4.9 billion contract was unanimously approved with LAX Integrated Express Solutions, the developer of the people mover. It is the largest contract ever awarded in the city’s history. Fluor is the managing partner of the design-build JV team.
