Kroger’s Seattle QFC Stores First to Grow Produce On Site

Cincinnati-based The Kroger Co. plans to grow produce on site at two Seattle-area QFC stores. America’s largest grocery retailer is partnering with German company Infarm to create modular living produce farms at stores, in a partnership Kroger calls the first of its kind in the United States.

QFC stores in Bellevue and Kirkland will be the first to launch the program this month. Eventually, the program will be expanded to 15 QFC stores located in the Seattle and Portland areas.

Kroger’s Suzy Monford says, “Our partnership with Infarm allows us to innovate by combining ground-breaking in-store farming technology with our passion for fresh, local produce and ecological sourcing.”

Produce will be grown in controlled-environment cases located in the stores produce areas. The living produce farms are expected to give customers access to the freshest and most sustainable produce. Hydroponic technology is used to grow produce that will be sold in the stores.
