Kroger to Sell 35 Illinois Stores as Part of Albertson’s Deal
Kroger has announced the 35 stores in Illinois that would be sold as part of the grocery giant’s planned merger with Albertsons. Many of the impacted stores are Mariano’s stores, and the list also includes several Jewel-Osco stores.
Cinnicinati-based Kroger owns the Mariano’s brand, and Albertsons owns Jewel-Osco. According to Kroger, none of the stores will close as a result of the sales. They would be divested to C&S Wholesale Grocers, the parent company of Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union supermarkets.
While the two massive grocery companies agreed to merge in 2022, the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the merger in February of this year, saying the $24.6 billion deal could result in higher prices for millions of American consumers. The Illinois stores are part of 579 locations Kroger Co. has identified to sell in an effort to get antitrust regulators’ approval for the acquisition of Albertsons.
