Kilgore Landfill Turns Trash into Gas
The Pine Hill Landfill in Kilgore, TX takes in 1,100 tons of trash a day. Thanks to a renewable energy facility onsite, some of the landfill materials provide enough energy from methane gas to heat 4,800 homes a year. The landfill, and plant, are at 1102 Pine Hill Landfill Rd.
The plant compresses methane gas, which it receives from more than 100 extraction wells at the 240-acre landfill. The plant, in turn, puts the gas to an off-site pipeline for delivery. Morrow Renewables, headquartered in Midland, TX, operates the plant. The landfill is owned by Republic Services.
The renewable energy plant is the seventh in Texas, and the 46th in the United States. It is able to generate 404.7 million cubic feet of renewable natural gas a year, which is equal to the amount of emissions from 22 million gallons of gasoline.
