Kaiser Permanente Looks to Build Kaiser School of Medicine

In 2019, Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente reportedly plans to open its very own national school of medicine in an undisclosed Southern California location.

According to Kaiser officials, the company’s goal is to provide a novel approach to physician education by focusing on patient care, especially the disparity between the care for rich and poor patients.

Chairman and CEO Bernard Tyson said, “Opening a medical school and influencing physician education is based on our belief that the new models of care mean we must re-imagine how physicians are trained.”

Proponents for the school believe that as the Affordable Care Act requires providers to take on insurance risk, the methods of practicing medicine must adjust. Graduates of the new Kaiser medical school will be free to practice anywhere, not necessarily solely at Kaiser.
