JSW Steel to Invest $500M in Baytown Plant Expansion
JSW Steel USA announced it would expand its steel plant in Baytown, TX through a $500 million investment. The move is anticipated to add up to 500 new jobs at an average salary of $65,000 to the property, which is on Houston’s far east side. According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the expansion means the plant can start sourcing raw steel from Texas and other states, instead of Brazil, Mexico and India.
JSW USA, which is a subsidiary of Mumbai, India-headquartered JSW Group, acquired the bankrupt plant on McKinney Road for approximately $810 million. The plant employs approximately 350 and is operating at 30% capacity. The expansion will take place in phases, and is contingent upon approval of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
