Joshua Tree Container Project’s Big, Bold Burst
A proposed container residence in California’s desert near Joshua Tree serves as another example of extreme creativity and environmental sensitivity. Not only is repurposing shipping containers easier on the planet, a London-based designer’s cluster of white cargo containers actually may fit nicely into the natural surroundings.
A Los Angeles film producer and his wife decided to install the containers on their 90-acre site. They commissioned James Whitaker for the assignment. His vision for a 2,153-square-foot vacation home emerges like a starburst amidst a rocky desert.
The home will feature an exoskeleton comprised of shipping containers that jut out at different angles, with cube forms extending from raised concrete columns. The containers are oriented to provide maximum views or privacy.
The interiors feature concrete flooring, white walls, and minimal decor that includes plywood furniture. An objective with the home was to deliver a connection to the surrounding desert, yet provide a sense of protection and privacy.
