Johnson Details $16B Budget With No Tax Hike, Plans to Close $538M Gap
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson delivered his first budget address to members of the City Council. He proposed a $16.6 billion budget plan for 2024, and in keeping with previously made campaign promises, will not increase base property taxes.
He also acknowledged that the city is facing a $538 million gap, noting the heavy impact the migrant crisis has had on the budget. Johnson laid out plans to fill the budget gap from revenue projections and other funding. He said his plan would work to fill holes without layoffs but noted it would take time to achieve his vision of a “better, stronger, safer Chicago.”
Johnson said he hopes to have the budget approved next month. His proposal preserved some of his predecessor’s policies such as contributing to the city’s pension funds and a continued emphasis on mental health support resources, including the Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) pilot started by former Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
