Jerome Ave Rezoning Nears the Finish Line
A rezoning of 95 blocks along Jerome Avenue in the Bronx has cleared all but the final hurdle in the approvals process. The City Council’s subcommittees and land use and zoning both approved the plan last week; it’s scheduled to go before the full Council on March 21.
The rezoning will be the fourth under Mayor de Blasio’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program, and the first in the Bronx, after rezonings in East New York, Far Rockaway and East Harlem. It will allow up to 4,600 new apartments to be built in the rezoned area.
In February, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. identified 2,000 apartments in the neighborhood that need to be preserved as affordable, after the de Blasio administration had committed to preserving 1,500. “While this achievement is appreciated, we can do more to keep this community affordable,” Diaz said last month.
