JDL Plans 2,700 Apartments for Moody Bible Site

JDL Development will introduce plans next month for a Near North Side residential project on land it’s set to acquire from Moody Bible Institute, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. At nearly 2,700 units, the project, to be called North Union, would be one of downtown’s largest in decades.

The development on the Moody property would include a mix of low-, mid- and high-rise buildings, 30,000 square feet of commercial space and about 1.3 acres of public open space, according to Ald. Brian Hopkins and the city’s Department of Planning and Development. Two towers, one 600 feet tall, would rise on the site’s northwest corner, JDL president Jim Letchinger told Crain’s.

JDL will need zoning approvals before starting construction, with community meetings a key early step in that process, according to Crain’s. Letchinger acknowledged that the downtown apartment market looks bleak at present, but said it will “come back strong” post-pandemic.
