Ivanhoe/Hines Partnership Taps Calatrava for Sculpture at River Point
In a Chicago tradition that has brought original works by Picasso, Chagall, Calder and others to the city, the team behind the 1.1-million-square-foot River Point tower will showcase the work of Santiago Calatrava. River Point partners Ivanhoé Cambridge, Hines and Levy Family Partners selected the Spanish architect/structural engineer/sculptor/painter to create a sculpture that will be installed in the park next to the 51-story office tower.
“Chicago is a city of both outstanding architecture and world-renowned public art,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “It is a testament to the new vitality of Chicago’s riverfront that one of the world’s foremost architects and artists chose the banks of the Chicago River for his latest work.”
Reaching 29 feet in height, Calatrava’s sculpture is described in a release as “an outward reaching spiral constructed of overlapping leaflike elements.” Fabrication is expected to take 14 months, and installation is expected for summer 2019.
