Irvine’s New Skyloft Apartments Debuts Dramatic Sculpture
On the southwest corner of Main and Jamboree in Irvine, CA, you won’t be able to miss a shining spectacle affixed to the corner of the Skyloft Apartments. “Mercury Falling”, a stainless steel, 60-foot tall sculpture, depicts pooling liquid mercury spilling from the roof of the building to the ground in a dynamic splash.
In 2017, Sanderson J. Ray Development, the owner of Skyloft, asked local artist Jorg Dubin to create a sculpture for the project. “As the building architecture is quite hard-edged, there was need for something more organic that would act as a foil against the angular building and bring some needed softness,” said Dubin. “Mercury Falling is also a metaphor for the hope that humans will act on climate change so that the ‘mercury’ will fall.”
“Skyloft makes a bold statement for its design, both inside and out, and Dubin’s masterpiece is striking and thought-provoking,” said Dawn Mills, regional manager at Legacy Partners which manages the complex.
