The Irvine Co. is reducing annual water consumption in six of its apartment buildings by 46 million gallons. The firm is doing so by installing low-flow toilets and shower heads in some of its older facilities.

Retrofitting 2,246 units will be necessary for the $880,000 program, which will cut water consumption by half in the properties. The assets getting upgraded are Baypoint, Bayview, Baywood, Mariner Square, Newport North and Promontory Point, all in Newport Beach.

These retrofits are part of Irvine Co.’s initiative to reduce water in its multi-sector portfolio, which includes multifamily, retail and office. For this part of the initiative, it will replace 3,096 3.5-gallon flush toilets with 1.28-gallon toilets, and 2.50-gallon-per-minute shower heads with 1.5-gallon-per-minute shower heads.
