Inwood Rezoning Wins Key Subcommittee Approval
The City Council’s zoning subcommittee has approved a rezoning of Northern Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood, following modifications to the original proposal. The plan, which has stirred community activism over concerns that it would lead to gentrification, will come up before the full City Council at its meeting on Wednesday.
Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who represents the neighborhood, announced at last week’s Zoning and Franchises Subcommittee meeting that the city would invest $500 million into Inwood, with two city-owned parcels to be developed exclusively as affordable housing. He also announced a carve-out in the 59-block rezoning, eliminating a U-shaped corridor along Dyckman Street, Broadway and 207th Street.
In a statement, Mayor Bill de Blasio called the subcommittee vote “the first step to ensure Inwood becomes a fairer and stronger neighborhood. It means security for families who deserve to stay in the neighborhood they love, and new education, employment and community investments.”
