Into the Woods . . . With a Small House

For those living in hustling, bustling urban areas, having a vacation home in the quiet of the country or woods can seem like an unattainable dream. Real estate prices, combined with construction costs, make building that vacation home out of reach for most.

But Klein, a new company located in Brooklyn, wants to change all of that with the introduction of its A45. Currently in a prototype phase, A45 is a 13-foot-long wood and glass cabin designed for one, two, or even three people. The tiny house is the design brainchild of Bjarke Ingels Group, a Danish architectural firm.

According to Klein founder Soren Rose, A4 is the first of many designs that will allow owners to have a home outside of cities. If someone wants a sustainable, tiny vacation house, all he/she needs to do is place an order and, within six months, Klein will have that place set up. Rose said the company will put together the structure, which includes excavation and installation of four concrete pillars, within two weeks. Everything is assembled by Klein, with the homeowners responsible only for excavation needed for the foundation.

As of now, Klein is taking preorders on a case-by-case basis, and has a “strong pipeline of A45 primarily in America, but are currently handling requests from all over the world,” Rose told FastCo.Design.

Prices for the small vacation homes are expected to range from $50,000 to $300,000.
