Could Interstate 27 Run to the Mexican Border?
The current Interstate 27 is a Texas Panhandle roadway linking Amarillo and Lubbock, TX. However, efforts to extend the road from the northern edge of the state south to the Mexican border could become reality. The Texas Transportation Commission (TTC), which oversees the Texas Department of Transportation, recommended a new feasibility study be completed for that extension, which would end up in Laredo.
The I-27 study was one of four strategic freight projects listed in the new Texas Freight Mobility Plan 2017, which was approved by the TTC before Thanksgiving. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, who chairs the Texas Freight Advisory Committee, indicated that a lot of freight moves through that part of West Texas. “So, this tees it up to make decisions in the future about where that route should go, maybe where it should intersect,” he told the TTC.
