Intel Job Cuts Begin
Santa Clara-based Intel, which is cutting 12,000 jobs by mid-2017, revealed more about the strategic plan it envisions. The world’s largest chip maker’s CEO Brian Krzanich says the goal is to transform “Intel from a PC company to a company that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices.”
Cuts to about 11% of its workforce have already begun, including 296 jobs at six facilities at its Santa Clara headquarters, 269 jobs in Folsom, CA, 784 jobs in Oregon, and 215 employees at a Rio Rancho, NM plant.
Intel is long-thought to replace Qualcomm’s chips inside Apple’s iPhones, a rumor that got louder after Qualcomm told analysts last week the company is “assuming” it is losing some orders from a big customer.
