Indiana University to Buy Dupont Office Building

The Indiana University (IU) Foundation is buying property in Washington, D.C., from Johns Hopkins University.

The eight-story building at 1619 Mass Ave. NW would accommodate housing for about 40 students, classrooms and offices. The school is under contract to buy the 59,000-square-foot property for sale last year after Johns Hopkins consolidated its operations along Pennsylvania Avenue.

The building is one of three that Johns Hopkins hired Cushman & Wakefield to sell, in addition to 1717 and 1740 Massachusetts Ave., reported the Washington Business Journal. The move would expand on IU’s existing programs in the capital, including the Washington, D.C. Advancement Center at 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue and the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

IU and Johns Hopkins proposed plans for the campus to the Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission. Approvals still need to be secured, with IU planning to file applications with the zoning commission, which will be subject to a public hearing.
