Increasing Texas University Enrollment, More Student Housing Construction

Texas has been making news due to its strong economy and burgeoning population growth. Now the Lone Star State is being known for something else: Soaring post-secondary student enrollment. This, in turn, means developers are eyeing near-campus locations for student housing developments.

A MarketFlash report from CBRE pointed out that, since 2000, enrollment in colleges and universities across Texas outpaced the U.S. average by 25%. The report notes that a population increase and a higher rate of Hispanic enrollment are a couple of reasons for this factor. By the same token, student housing development hit a record construction volume in 2016, with $8 billion invested in the sector in 2017.

Additionally, “as the construction cycle matures, developers and investors are adapting to fresh ideas,” a CBRE analyst said. Some of the ideas include public-private partnerships and enhanced on-site amenities.
