Increased Office Density Means Increased Parking Demands
In a move toward efficiency, companies are cutting their office footprints and squeezing more employees into less space. Collaborative workspaces are replacing larger offices and conference rooms. The problem, however, is that an increase in density means more employees, with more demands being placed on parking, as well as a building’s elevators, utilities and restrooms.
For example, a parking ratio of four stalls per 1,000 square feet was once considered sufficient. But these days, buildings might need up to seven parking spots per 1,000 square feet.
Some solutions to the issue have included building parking decks on top of lots, and using adjacent lots for parking. Some building owners are also looking at shuttles, as well as encouraging their employees to use public transportation.
