Illinois Plant Will Produce 100K Amazon Electric Vans

Six months after making a $440-million investment in electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian, Amazon has placed what’s reportedly the largest-ever order of electric delivery vehicles. Rivian will produce 100,000 EVs at a former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, IL.

The e-commerce giant said the first vans will begin delivering packages to customers in 2021. Amazon plans to have 10,000 of the new EVs on the road as early as 2022, and all 100,000 vehicles on the road by 2030, a move that the company says will save four million metric tons of carbon per year by 2030.

Although Rivian has yet to build its first vehicle, a company spokeswoman told Crain’s Chicago Business that a delivery vehicle based on its battery-electric powertrain and chassis has been in development for some time.

Rivian is retooling the Normal facility for EV production, and expects to begin rolling out vehicles there next year.

Connect Chicago Fall 2019 will take place Oct. 29 in Chicago. For more information, or to register, click here.
