Illinois Passes Legislation to Lift Ban on Large Nuclear Plants
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGA) to spur production of battery storage, renewable energy resources, and strengthen energy efficiency programs, while also lifting the state’s ban on new nuclear power plants.
CRGA aims to capture clean energy through solar, wind, and nuclear programs, build out battery storage systems, and allocate a minimum amount of funds to support low-income customers.
“In Illinois, we are pursuing every available option to produce affordable, efficient, clean, and abundant energy.” said Pritzker. “The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act sets a national standard in the effort to lower energy costs and marks a historic step forward in our clean energy vision.”
The bill seeks to offset national federal slowdowns and cancellations of wind and solar developments. The bill also lifts the state’s ban on new nuclear power plants. Illinois had previously lifted a ban on next-gen, smaller, modular nuclear reactors, but this bill allows for large-scale facilities.
