IKEA Will Introduce Urban Store Concept with Queens Location

IKEA will introduce a new urban store concept to the U.S. via its first location in Queens. The Sweden-based home goods retailer has signed a lease with Alexander’s Inc. for 112,500 square feet at the REIT’s Rego Park I shopping center in a space formerly occupied by Sears.

The smaller-format Rego Park I location will stand in contrast to both IKEA’s 346,000-square-foot, full-service store in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, and the delivery-only IKEA Planning Studio that opened on Manhattan’s Upper East Side this past spring.

“With a growing community of more than 900,000 households, Queens was a natural next destination for IKEA in New York City,” said Leontyne Green Sykes, COO, IKEA Retail U.S. “We know that more than half of Queens’ residents travel via public transportation, and we selected Rego Park for this new store concept to meet the unique needs of this customer.”
