Iconic San Antonio Highrise Slated for Apartments

The famous Nix building will soon take on a new look, this time as a combination restaurant/apartment building. The San Antonio Business Journal reports Innjoy Hospitality is looking to convert the building into a multifamily development with 329 apartments and a ground-floor food and beverage component. XA Collective Architecture + Planning and HM3 Engineering and A-1 Engineering are part of the development team.

The building, which has been closed since 2020, opened as the J. M. Nix Professional Building in 1930 and was later known as the Nix Medical Center. It was a 208-bed acute care hospital located at 414 Navarro Street in downtown San Antonio.

The Nix was the largest and tallest hospital in the United States. During its formal opening it boasted a basement with a cafeteria, tailor shop, and barbershop; a main lobby with marble floors and brass fixtures; eight floors of parking space; ten floors of office space; and a 200-bed hospital on the top six floors.
