Hydrogen-Powered Data Center Planned for Laredo

Energy Abundance Development Corp. is planning a massive data center hub near Laredo, that eventually would be powered by a hydrogen fuel source. That would mean it wouldn’t require any power from the grid.

To be called Data City, the behind-the-meter data center project would develop 300 megawatts of power and 1 million square feet of data center space in 2026, expanding to 5 GW of power and over 15 million square feet of leasable space. The project will initially run on natural gas produced in Texas and will eventually shift to 100% green hydrogen from the company’s 2-terawatt-hour hydrogen salt dome storage facility.

Energy Abundance says the project will be the world’s largest behind-the-meter data center hub powered by 100% 24/7 green energy. The project will utilize underground salt cavern storage at the Piedras Pintas Salt Dome, west of Corpus Christi. The storage facility will get its power from adjacent solar and wind farms.

Energy Abundance recently moved from Austin to Houston, leasing space in Pennzoil Place at 700 Milam St. in downtown Houston.
