Academy Sports + Outdoor is looking to build a 51,000 square foot store in Hutto’s booming Townwest Commons. A public filing indicated the project will cost $7 million and will only take six months to complete. Academy Sports has 269 stores throughout the country, 10 in the Austin area.

The sports retailer will join a similarly sized EVO Entertainment Center at the growing mall that will be completed next year. The $25 million EVO attraction has bowling lanes, games, and depending on the location, attractions like climbing walls, virtual reality, ropes courses, and bumper cars, while serving cuisine from their kitchens and bars. The center also has a Walgreen’s and a Lowe’s.

Hutto has experienced prodigious growth in the last 20 years. The 2000 census reported just 1,250 people, and now more than 30,000 people call the growing community home. This Eastern-Williamson County community is 27 miles northeast of downtown Austin.
