Hunts Point Produce Market to Undergo $635M Redevelopment

Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a redevelopment agreement for the aging Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, which sources more than 2.5 billion pounds of produce annually. The project cost is estimated at $635 million, including an anticipated $230-million federal loan along with $405 million in city, state and federal funding.

Aurora-Primus, a joint venture design-build firm with Aurora Contractors, LLC and Primus Builders, Inc. as principal entities, was selected to execute the project. Among other things, the redevelopment calls for delivering a state-of-the-art, intermodal food distribution facility that supports daily market operations for the city’s produce needs; expanding refrigerated warehouse space; and eliminating stationary diesel-fueled Transport Refrigeration Units, with the goal of cleaner air for nearly 13,000 nearby residents.

The redevelopment is expected to begin late this year, following environmental reviews and design work overseen by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
