Huizenga Family Joins the Fulton Market Parade
Add the Huizenga family to the roster of prospective landlords in Fulton Street Market. The family that built the Waste Management garbage-hauling empire is bankrolling Fulton St. Companies with plans for a 200-room hotel and a couple hundred thousand square feet of office, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.
The Fulton St. Companies venture is reportedly under contract to buy more than half an acre at the southeast corner of Fulton Market and Sangamon Street from longtime food wholesaler Nealey Foods. Fulton St.’s founder, Alex Najem, plans to redevelop the property with a large office and retail project.
In a separate deal, Fulton St. and Encinitas, CA-based Robert Green are negotiating a deal with Montage Hotels & Resorts to open a 12-story Pendry luxury hotel at 1025 W. Fulton Market. That proposed $100-million development would include the 132,000-square-foot hotel along with an adjacent six-story, 46,000-square-foot office building.
