Houston’s Northeast Water Purification Plant Undergoing $1.8B Expansion

The city of Houston, in conjunction with four regional water authority partners, has begun a design-build expansion of the Northeast Water Purification Plant on the metro’s far northeast side, in and around Humble, TX. The $1.765-billion project will lead to a water-treatment plant that will process 320 million gallons per day (MGD).

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., through the Houston Waterworks Team, was awarded three separate contracts on the project. The company is focused on the early works Central Plant foundations package, on which work began in June 2018, the raw water Intake Pump Station, which began in early 2019, and the remainder of the Central Plant, which started in August 2019.

The first 80 MGD phase is anticipated to be operational in early 2023. McCarthy’s construction work will be complete in 2024, and the overall 320 MGD plant will be fully operational by early 2025.
