City of Houston moving forward on a 500-unit affordable housing project

Houston Trying to Kickstart 500-Unit Affordable Housing Project

A 500-unit development proposed for a 10.7-acre site at 800 Burnett St. would be the county’s largest project to use funds from the American Rescue Fund Plan Act.

Harris County Commissioners Court allocated $14.6 million in American Rescue Fund Plan Act money and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to buy the land from the city of Houston.

After the land is acquired, Harris County will start the request for proposals process and steering committee for the project, which is expected to take years.

The county received $915.5 million in ARPA funds, $273 million of which was designated for housing projects and programs.

With the Hardy Yards project, Harris County’s ARPA fund allocations for development will have supported 18 different projects.
