Houston Street in Local AIA’s Crosshairs

Centro San Antonio, the local chapter of the American Institute for Architects (AIA), is teaming with Urban Land Institute to host a community forum concerning the revival of Houston Street, which cuts through downtown San Antonio. The discussion is scheduled from 8 a.m.- Noon, Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Henry Ford Academy Alameda School for Art, 318 W. Houston St.

During the event, guests will be split into groups to explore different segments of Houston Street, based on an already-existing framework report that was compiled by an advisory panel from the International Downtown Association.

The street has a storied history as a thriving retail hub during the 1920s. However, as the city began to build away from downtown in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the large department stores went with it. But according to AREA Real Estate’s David Adelman, the tide is returning to downtown. AREA Real Estate owns several buildings near Houston Street.
